Media server cannot gather connection candidates (ICE error 2021)

What it means

The media server failed to gather its own ICE connection candidates.

Likely causes

coturn not running
Wrong external-ip
Cloud security group blocks UDP

What to do

This error comes from the server or API, so go straight to the server checks.

Students

Notify instructor; try another network to compare.

Teachers

Record issue time for admins. Tell participants it is a server-side problem they cannot fix themselves, and contact your admin.

Server admins

bbb-conf --check, verify coturn listening, set relay-ip and external-ip, open UDP 3478 and media range. Check that mediasoup's announced IP(s) match the server's public IPv4/IPv6. Run sudo bbb-conf --clean, then sudo bbb-conf --watch while reproducing the error to see log errors live.
