Code 1020
Category: VideoMessage shown in BigBlueButton
Media could not reach the server (error 1020)
What it means
Webcam media could not reach the media server in time.
Likely causes
- Network or firewall blocking camera media after signalling succeeded
- Insufficient upload bandwidth
- No TURN relay available on a restrictive network
What to do
First, check who is affected.
- Only one or a few users: most likely a problem on the user's side, so follow the Student and Teacher steps.
- Everyone in one room: check that room/meeting (settings, meeting ended or recreated, room limits).
- Everyone in every room: most likely a server problem, so go to the Admin/server steps.
Students
Lower video quality in settings and use a wired network. Try another network (for example a mobile hotspot) to check whether your current network blocks the connection.
Teachers
Ask students to turn off HD webcam if the room is large.
Server admins
Scale media servers, verify firewall UDP range, monitor packet loss on bbb-webrtc-sfu. Check that mediasoup's announced IP(s) match the server's public IPv4/IPv6. Set up a TURN server (coturn) and list it in /etc/bigbluebutton/turn-stun-servers.xml for users on restrictive networks.
