Could not fetch STUN/TURN server information (error 1009)

What it means

The client could not fetch STUN/TURN server information (legacy).

No code in BigBlueButton 3.0 raises this code; the message is a leftover from older versions.

Likely causes

  • Client/server version mismatch or bug
  • Network interruption

What to do

First, check who is affected.

  1. Only one or a few users: most likely a problem on the user's side, so follow the Student and Teacher steps.
  2. Everyone in one room: check that room/meeting (settings, meeting ended or recreated, room limits).
  3. Everyone in every room: most likely a server problem, so go to the Admin/server steps.

Students

Check your internet connection (Wi‑Fi signal or cable) before rejoining.

Server admins

Set up a TURN server (coturn) and list it in /etc/bigbluebutton/turn-stun-servers.xml for users on restrictive networks. Run sudo bbb-conf --check and fix the problems it reports.
