Code 1002
Category: AudioMessage shown in BigBlueButton
Could not make a WebSocket connection (error 1002)
What it means
The browser could not open a WebSocket to the audio service.
Likely causes
- Firewall or proxy blocking WSS
- Wrong hostname on join URL
- bbb-webrtc-sfu not reachable
What to do
First, check who is affected.
- Only one or a few users: most likely a problem on the user's side, so follow the Student and Teacher steps.
- Everyone in one room: check that room/meeting (settings, meeting ended or recreated, room limits).
- Everyone in every room: most likely a server problem, so go to the Admin/server steps.
Students
Try another network (mobile hotspot) to rule out firewall issues. Disable strict VPN browser extensions. Update your browser to a supported version: Chrome 87+, Firefox 80+, Edge 85+ or Safari 14+.
Teachers
Confirm participants use the official join link from your LMS or invitation.
Server admins
Verify TLS certificates, DNS, and that nginx proxies the SFU WebSocket to bbb-webrtc-sfu (clientPort 3008 by default). Check that nginx runs and its config is valid (sudo nginx -t, /var/log/nginx/error.log). Run sudo bbb-conf --check and fix the problems it reports.
