Code 2022
Category: Media serverMessage shown in BigBlueButton
Media server connection failed (ICE error 2022)
What it means
ICE_STATE_FAILED: the media server's connection to this user's browser failed (often in bbb-webrtc-sfu / mediasoup). Usually that points to a network or browser issue on the user's side, but it can also reflect TURN or external IP misconfiguration on the server.
bbb-webrtc-sfu 2.24 (BigBlueButton 3.0) never sends 2022. Client-side ICE failures (internal code 1307) appear to users as 1007 (audio) or 1107 (screen share/camera).
Likely causes
- Firewall or VPN blocking UDP media ports
- Browser extension or privacy setting limiting WebRTC
- Corporate proxy or restrictive network with no TURN fallback
- Server-side wrong external IP, closed ports, or mismatched TURN secret
What to do
First, check who is affected.
- Only one or a few users: most likely a problem on the user's side, so follow the Student and Teacher steps.
- Everyone in one room: check that room/meeting (settings, meeting ended or recreated, room limits).
- Everyone in every room: most likely a server problem, so go to the Admin/server steps.
Students
Try another browser, disable extensions or VPN, and try another network (e.g. mobile data). Rejoin the session after changes.
Teachers
If only some students are affected, share BigBlueButton network requirements with them. If everyone in the room fails, note the time and contact your server admin.
Server admins
Verify external IP, open UDP media ports, and ensure the TURN secret matches between turnserver.conf (static-auth-secret) and /etc/bigbluebutton/turn-stun-servers.xml. Test with turnutils_uclient. Test TURN with the trickle ICE page: you should see relay candidates; if not, check the coturn logs.
